About Eclipse Company Town
The Eclipse Company Town, originally called Hocking, was built by the Hocking Valley Coal Company between 1900 and 1902. It was operated by the Johnson Brothers, for whom Johnson Road was named. The company Town sits atop Eclipse Mine #4 of the Hocking Valley Coal Company.
Miners and their families lived in the town. The company store served as the pay station and general store for the miners.
The mine operated from 1900 until the early 1930's when it closed... as did many mines in the area during the Depression. It reopened in 1940 as part of the World War II effort, and continued operation until 1948. The town and its buildings transferred to the former mine's superintendent, E.A. Cottingham, and remained privately owned until 1997, when it was purchased by Eclipse, Ltd.
